Course_Outline_SCIN-2007_Winter_2019
Hello Sculpture and Installation Students, please take a few minutes to participate in the survey.
SCIN is currently undergoing a routine program review to assess the quality of the program and to consider future planning for the program. Your input as a student and colleague is an extremely valuable and necessary component of this review.
We invite you to share your thoughts by completing a survey about the program. The survey is voluntary and will not affect your standing in the program. The survey is not being administered by the program, but by Institutional Analysis at OCAD U. Any information you provide will be anonymous and used confidentially in the program review.
We expect the survey to take 15-30 minutes to complete. You can access the survey at the following link:
https://survey.ocadu.ca/index.php/192257?lang=en/OCADProgramSurvey
The survey will remain open until 5pm (EST), Friday January 24, 2020.

Exercise
Stan to read Wild Mind: Living the Writer's Life, by Natalie Goldberg, Chapter 1 -The Rules of Writing Practice
Go away and do something during the break (but take photos first and collect paper info slips). Try to be spontaneous. Keep your hand moving, so-to-speak. Bring something back, if you can. Take a picture, or a video?
Last year, we did this:
Then, with a partner, go do something spontaneous, with your "writing hand" taking no more than 5 minutes, your partner will be responsible for bringing back what you do, in some form. Then switch, taking turns, the other now doing something spontaneous, with your "writing hand" taking no more than 5 minutes, with alternate partner responsible for bringing back what you do. Don't think. Keep your hand moving. Be specific. Lose control. (But do no harm, and tread lightly). Bring back the story, the description, and even better some visuals. Report on what your partner did to the class.

PLEASE BE SAFE
Any art work, installation or performance that can potentially put your self or others at risk must be discussed with Stan before beginning the work.
Research Involving Human Participants and the OCAD U Research Ethics Board:
http://www.ocadu.ca/research/research-ethics-board.htm
Looking into Research Ethics is something you need to consider when working with human participants in your projects, and in order to know about how to go about this kind of work ethically, your first step might be to review this site, or talk to Stan. For questions about the Research Ethics Board, please contact Chris Pineda at cpineda@ocadu.ca
Installation Rooms
Please return installation rooms to a bare, clean, unmarked space when you are done. Please be sure to completely de-install after your presentation and remove all of your stuff. Please be aware of times when other students may have booked the room and will expect the room to be clear, clean and available. Room bookings can be made through David Meachen, dmeachen@ocadu.ca, x337, Faculty of Art Office, room 401. Patch kits and paint can be signed-out from Tool Loans, and are also available from the First-Year/SCIN shop during the evening, after Tool Loans is closed.
Absences
If necessary, I will be writing to students at mid-term who are absenting themselves from class to remind them that the university policy is that a student with three or more unexcused absences may be assigned a failing grade, and that their participation is a very important and respectful part of our critiquing process. Please note that leaving class early or arriving late can each count as an absence. If you are sick, or not feeling well, you should stay home and get better, but at some point it challenges the notion that you have completed the course. But mostly, we want everyone to participate.
When you don't attend, or need to be late or leave early, I would appreciate an email from you to let me know please.
For your information: Attendance Policy
http://www.ocadu.ca/Assets/content/registrarial/1010-attendance-policy.pdf
"The College expects students to attend classes and participate in them by the standards established by the teaching faculty and as stated in the Calendar. Students’ full participation in the College’s studio and academic classes is essential to their education. Given that students benefit from an active involvement with faculty and with their fellow students in classes, the College requires that students attend classes on a regular basis and that they participate fully in them."
"Please note, a student with three or more unexcused absences may be assigned a failing grade for that course."

Late Fact Sheets
Please remember that you are expected to have your Fact Sheet completed on the day you present, and before your presentation. I know this is a lot of tedious work, and the Fact Sheet only counts for 5%, but it is important work and it important to have it posted on time, so please do it. This is why….
I don't want you to write the fact sheet after your critique, because I don't want you to be influenced by our comments during the critique. (However, you might want to make notes from the comments after your critique, which should be valuable to you, and which may be helpful with your artist statement in assignment #3.) Rather, I want you to struggle to find the words that make up the Fact Sheet on your own, so that you practice this skill and get better at it.
You are also providing your reviewing student important information that the he/she needs in order to start the critiquing process, together with useful details that help in writing the review. Having your Fact Sheet posted in a timely manner is a courtesy to the reviewing student.
