I still find this stop-motion video remarkable in that the motion flows so smoothly despite the fact that the camera was hand-held as I walked beneath the bridge, shooting many still photographs (not video) and using no additional steadying device.

The method was simple. To take each photograph, I sighted with my eye through the viewfinder of the camera maintaining a visual hold on a visible target (in this case, an iron cross-brace on the bridge) keeping it centred on the viewfinder crosshairs. After taking a picture, and without removing the camera from my eye, I took one step further along the ravine path, and took another picture, repeating the process for the entire sequence. It took almost half an hour.

As I approached the bridge, walking along the path, I began the image sequence once the bridge and its cross-brace first came into view. I continued the image sequence, first walking forwards towards the bridge, and then, after passing under the bridge, I continued the image sequence, stepping backwards along the path until I could no longer see the bridge's iron cross-brace.

If you hold your finger at the centre of the screen, you will see that iron cross-brace of the bridge is always at the centre of the screen.

I found it particularly interesting to consider the mechanics of my neck and how it accommodated such a smooth transition from walking forward to backwards, and from looking straight ahead to looking up over my head and then back down again, as I passed under the bridge. It was a remarkable thing to experience, in the moment.

Preparing for this show, I have come to see this work has a performance aspect.

Immediately following shooting this sequence, I used the memo function of the camera to take seven audio notations, as a journal document of the experience. You can listen to these audio recordings (or read the transcripts) by clicking the links at the top of this page.
